Merge PDFs

Combine several PDFs into one, in the order you choose. Everything happens in your browser.

Merge PDFs in three steps

  1. 01

    Drop your PDFs

Drag your files onto the drop zone, or click to choose them. Each one is read right away: its page count appears, and a protected or damaged PDF is flagged immediately.

  2. 02

    Put them in order

Drag the rows with the mouse, or use their arrows, from the keyboard or with a finger. The merged PDF will follow the order of the list, top to bottom.

  3. 03

    Merge and download

One click joins every page into a single PDF, named after the first file. Download it: nothing has left your device.

A merge done in your browser

Hexiven Compress joins your PDFs on your own device, in your browser. The files are never sent to a server: no copy, no storage, no deletion delay to keep an eye on. That is what makes it safe to merge a contract, a bank statement or a medical record. The only exchange with the site is the download of the tool itself, when you drop your first file.

Pages are copied, not reprinted

Merging does not turn your pages into pictures: each page is copied as it is, with its text, fonts and images. The text stays selectable and searchable, and every page keeps its size and orientation. Links to websites stay clickable, and links that led from one page to another within a file still lead to the right page of the merged PDF.

Bookmarks, forms and signatures

The bookmarks of each file are carried over, in the order of the list, and lead to the pages of the merged PDF. Form fields stay filled in and editable. If two files share a field name, for instance two copies of the same form, the field from the later file is renamed so that each keeps its own value. An electronic signature, however, cannot survive a merge: it vouches for a file byte for byte, and joining files necessarily changes it. The merged PDF therefore carries no signature, and the tool says so.

What a merge leaves out

Some information belongs to the document as a whole rather than to its pages, and does not pass into the merged PDF: files attached to the document, accessibility tags (the structure that screen readers follow), custom page numbering (i, ii, iii…) and scripts run when the document opens. The title and author of the merged PDF are those of the first file. If any of these matter, keep the originals.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The merge happens in your browser, on your device. Your PDFs are not sent, copied or kept by the site.

How many PDFs can I merge?

As many as you like, from two upwards. There is no limit on number or size: the only limit is your device's memory, since every file is loaded into it during the merge. Above 100 MB in total, a warning says that the browser may slow down.

How do I change the order of the files?

Drag a row of the list to its new place, or use its arrows to move it up or down one step. The arrows work from the keyboard as well as on a touch screen. The merged PDF follows the order of the list, top to bottom.

Can I merge a password-protected PDF?

No. The content of a protected PDF, whether by an opening password or by restrictions (printing, copying), is encrypted: it cannot be copied into another file. The tool flags it as soon as you drop it. Remove the protection with the software that set it, then drop the file again.

Does the text stay selectable?

Yes. Pages are copied as they are, never through an image: text stays text, which you can select, copy and search. Images keep their original quality, and the merged PDF weighs roughly the sum of the files you started with.

What happens to bookmarks and links?

The bookmarks of each file are carried over, in the order of the list. Links to websites stay clickable, and links within a file still lead to the right page.

What about an electronically signed PDF?

It can be merged, but the resulting PDF no longer carries the signature: it only holds for the original file, byte for byte. A warning reminds you. Keep the signed original if the signature matters.

Is the merged PDF smaller?

No: merging joins, it does not compress. To make the resulting PDF lighter, run it through the Hexiven Compress compressor afterwards, which reduces the weight of images without touching the text.
