Compress a PDF or an image

Your files are processed in your browser and never uploaded to a server.

Compression level

Compress a file in three steps

  1. 01

    Choose a level

“Balanced” suits most uses. “Smallest” reduces the size further, “Best quality” touches images the least.

  2. 02

    Drop your files

Drag your PDFs or images into the drop area, or click to choose them. You can drop several at once.

  3. 03

    Download the result

Each file shows its new size and the space saved. Download them one by one, or all together in a ZIP archive.

Your files never leave your device

Compression happens entirely in your browser. The website has no way to receive a file: it sends your browser the compression program, which then works on your computer or phone. A contract, a bank statement or an ID document can be made lighter without handing it to anyone.

Why is a PDF so heavy?

In a heavy PDF, the weight almost always comes from images: photos, scanned pages, illustrations saved at high resolution. Text weighs almost nothing. That is why a mostly text PDF barely shrinks, while a scanned document can lose a large part of its size.

What compression changes in a PDF

Hexiven Compress recompresses the images inside the PDF and caps their size according to the chosen level. Text stays text: it remains selectable, searchable and readable by a screen reader, and links stay clickable. If the saving is too small, the tool says so and you keep the original.

And for images?

A JPEG photo or a lossy WebP image is re-encoded at the quality of the chosen level, without changing its dimensions. A PNG image, or a lossless WebP, is optimized without any loss: every pixel stays identical, so the saving is more modest. A photo's metadata, such as the date, the camera or the GPS location, is removed along the way.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hexiven Compress free?

Yes. The tool is free, with no account to create and no advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. All compression happens in your browser, on your device. Your files are sent neither to our servers nor to any third party.

Does the text in my PDF stay selectable?

Yes. Only the images inside the PDF are recompressed: the text, fonts and links remain those of the original document.

Why did my PDF barely shrink?

A mostly text PDF is already light: there is almost nothing to save. When the saving would be too small, the tool tells you and you keep the original: it never offers a heavier version.

Which level should I choose?

“Balanced” suits emailing or sharing a document. “Smallest” gives the smallest file, at the cost of some sharpness in images. “Best quality” compresses lightly and keeps images as close to the original as possible. You can change the level afterwards: your files are recompressed right away.

Which formats are accepted?

PDFs and JPEG, PNG and WebP images.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

No. A protected PDF, by a password or by restrictions, cannot be compressed, and the tool tells you so.

What happens to a PDF's electronic signature?

It does not survive compression, since the file is rewritten. The tool warns you: keep the original if the signature matters.

Is there a size limit?

No limit is imposed: the only one is your device's memory. Above 100 MB, a warning lets you know your browser may slow down during compression.
